What does self-cleaning mean?

The term “self-cleaning oven” usually refers to the catalytic and pyrolytic oven linings/cleaning methods.

It is a type of oven that uses high temperature to burn all the dirt off and turns them into ashes.

Often it has a special coating on the interior walls – usually on the back and on the sides.

How to know if you have a self-cleaning oven?

The best way to find out whether you have the life-saver oven or not, is to check its user guide. If you can’t find it, you can always look up online – simply search using the model number of your oven.

If you weren’t lucky with the user guides, then the other thing you can do is check your oven. Self-cleaning sides of the oven usually have a different colour and texture – see the examples below.

How to use the self-clean mode?

There are 2 options you can choose from if you want to use the self-cleaning mode, depending on what type of coating your oven has.

1. Catalytic coating: this type of coating absorbs food and grease and breaks them down. All of this broken-down food and grease is then simply burnt away during cooking. How to self-clean it? If you don’t run your oven very regularly over 200ºC, then you should heat your oven at 220ºC for thirty minutes or so every month, to ensure the food and grease are burnt away. Job done! Note: Do not spray any chemicals onto a catalytic coated surface and do not scrub it. These can damage the coating which then will lose its self-cleaning quality.
2. Pyrolytic method: While catalytic method is an actual coating of the inside of the oven, pyrolytic method is a special program that you run on your oven. When you turn this program on, the oven runs to temperatures of over 400ºC. Once the pyrolytic cleaning program has finished – typically this program takes about two hours – the food is turned to ash, and you can simply brush it away.

Conclusion

It’s a good practice to check your oven’s user guide before starting to scrub it – you could save yourself from hours of cleaning and wasting your money on different oven cleaning products.

Additionally, it’s also handy to learn about the different types of oven linings before buying your next oven. In the end, who doesn’t want a self-cleaning oven?!

What do you need to clean your oven?

The most essential tool you should have is a scouring pad. Without it, you have very little chance against all the burnt-on grease.

There are some other important things you should get that helps to clean oven.

• Gloves to protect your skin from the chemicals.
• Goggles to protect your eyes from chemical and carbon build up.
• Glass scraper to scrape off the tough burned on grease.
• Cloths to wipe off the scraped off carbon and to wipe the oven clean.
• A bowl with soapy water to rinse off the chemicals.
• Soda crystal, washing up liquid and boiling hot water to remove grease from oven racks.
• Multi-surface cleaner (optional) to rinse off any chemical residue and to leave the oven smelling fresh. Tip: use diluted Zoflora for a long-lasting scent.
• Glass cleaner (optional) for ultimate shining glass doors.
• Oven rack soaking tray (optional).

What chemical should you use?

Choosing the right chemical is a really difficult task. There are some strong smelling, harsh products out there that could damage your oven without actually being effective. But which ones should you trust?
The top 3 products you can trust are:

• Astonish oven cleaning products, especially the paste.
• Oven Brite – I’ve personally only used it once before, but many of my clients have regularly used them. They’ve all said it’s great to keep on top of the job, but it is time consuming.
• Professional Bio Oven Cleaner – our choice. An eco-friendly product, that’s safe to use even without gloves. It’s a plant-based oven cleaner made from seaweed. Extremely effective and really safe to use. No strong scents. Gentle with the oven yet effective against burnt on grease.

How to clean your oven? In 5 simple steps

So, you’ve got all the equipment and chemical. Let’s see now how to clean your oven?

Before & After

• Step 1: Remove oven racks, trays and side racks from the oven. Prepare boiling hot water in the kitchen sink or oven rack soaking tray. Add soda crystals and washing up liquid, then place the racks (and tray) in there. Leave them in the water for 30-60mins.
• Step 2: Spray the chemical on the walls of the oven and on the glass of the inside of the oven door. With some products, for the best results, you should heat up the oven to a lukewarm temperature prior to spraying with chemicals. Always check this on the label of the product. Leave the chemicals to work for at least an hour, but ideally 2 hours.
• Step 3: Grab your scraper and scrape off the tough burnt on grease from both the oven walls and door. Once most of the tough grease came off, scrub the area with the scouring pad. You might need to repeat this process with difficult ovens.
• Step 4: In a bowl prepare some water with washing up liquid. Wet a cloth in the soapy water, then wipe off the loosened up dirt from the oven. Additionally, you can spray the oven with a multi-surface cleaner (or diluted Zoflora) to remove any chemical residue. Then wipe the oven with a dry cloth. Tip: For shiny oven doors, spray the glass of the oven door with a window cleaner, then wipe it with a dry cloth.
• Step 5: It’s time for the oven racks.
  Simply grab your scouring pad and get scrubbing. All the burnt on grease should peel off like a dream without having to scrub very hard. Rinse the racks and tray off with clean water. Wipe them with a dry cloth and now they’re ready to go back to the oven.
  Tip: instead of soaking the racks and trays in boiling water, you can also wash them in your dishwasher. Difficult racks will need a few washes.

The first step of the carpet cleaning is dry soil removal. As a result, a professional and powerful hoover is one of the most important things to have

• Household carpet cleaners have built-in brushes – which are not as effective as the agitating brushes that professionals have. These agitating brushes  powerfully brush through the carpet, lifting up the carpet and all the dirt from it – way more effectively than the built-in brushes do.
• Last but not least, commercial carpet cleaners have significantly better suction than the domestic ones. For comparison, a Prochem carpet cleaner is at least 5x more powerful than the Rug Doctor.

This may sound controversial, especially because all we’ve talked about before is how important it is to have proper hoover and carpet cleaner machine. Both statements are true. Yes, it is really important to have strong machines with

powerful suction to remove dirt. However, even if you don’t have the best hoover and carpet cleaner, you can still achieve great results. How? By simply having professional chemicals that are able to tackle the dirt in high traffic areas, and able to remove spots and stains. And by simply knowing which chemical to use and how to use it on a certain spot. Without knowing them, stains won’t come out even if you have the best of best machines.

Best cleaning products – Astonish Cream Cleaner with Bleach

Those who follow me on social media know by now, that this is one of my most used chemicals. There are other versions of this cream cleaner with different scents for different areas of the home, but this is The One for me. I just love it! And if I love something then I’m loyal and will use that till the end of my life… Or at least until I find a better product.

So why is it so good?

• First of all, it’s cheap ( it’s only £1 ) – and who doesn’t love cheap bits?!
• Second – it lasts forever, which is amazing!
• Third – it actually works.

But what is it good for?

•  Limescale removal: it removes mild limescale from taps, showers and tiles.
• Cleaning of ceramic sinks: if you have a ceramic sink that has some grey and black scratch marks on it, then this product is for you. It removes all those annoying marks along with any coffee or tea stains.
• My personal favourite : it whitens the grouts. If the tile grouts in the bathroom or kitchen turned yellow or has stained, simply grab a toothbrush and this cream cleaner and get scrubbing. I guarantee you’ll have white grouts again!
• Mould removal: since it has bleach in it (which is one of the cure against mould) it’s able to remove mould from the grouts. It’s not effective against heavy mould but it works amazingly against mould that’s just starting to appear.
• +1: it disinfects: it has bleach in it, which helps to sanitize the area that you are cleaning. As a result, it’s a must have for your bathroom.

Best cleaning products – E-cloth

E-cloth has only one job: buffing up shiny surfaces – and she does it like a pro! For a long time I believed that a simple dry microfiber cloth or micro glass cloth will do the job, but oh how wrong I was!

Whereas microfiber and micro glass cloths can leave the area full of smudges and smears, E-cloth won’t disappoint you. But it only works while it’s dry (and clean of course). There’s no magic around it, it’s just a cloth that does its job.

But why is it that good?

You can use it on any shiny areas:

• Windows and Mirrors
• Taps and sinks
• Any glass items – coffee tables, vases, lampshades
• TV and computer screens
• Shower doors & screens

You won’t need to use kitchen rolls any more to clean the glass areas. On top of that, it’s also lint free, so you can have a picture perfect and shiny home.

Best cleaning products – Window vac

For a long time I didn’t understand the point why I should use a window vac. After a few of my friends have recommended it to me, I’ve decided I’ll give it a try. I bought a Karcher window vac and since I’ve got it it’s in a daily use. I have even considered buying a second one, simply because sometimes we have to wait for our turn to use it…

What is it good for?

We use it for anything we can really! In the bathroom, we use it on the shower screens and shower doors. We also use it on the tiles to help them get dry – this way you can avoid having limescale on them again.

Another very obvious way to use it is to clean… drumroll… windows!! And, if by any chance, it leaves a few strikes on the surface, simply use a dry E-cloth to buff up the area. You can also use window vac to clean up spillages or to dry up condensation on your windows.

Why use window vac?

• It saves time – window cleaning takes literally seconds, just like cleaning the shower screens.
• It saves the environment – by avoiding using paper towels or newspapers to clean windows, you can have a huge impact on the environment. We have used to use large amount of paper towels – probably about 4-5 rolls per week, if not more. Since we have our window vac, I have not bought a single one of the paper towels. Of course, E-cloth had a massive affect on not buying paper towels too.
• It saves money – buy not needing to buy paper towels, you will end up saving a significant amount of money.

Who is it for?

Anyone really. But especially for those who want to get the cleaning done quickly and efficiently. It’s great for those who have loads of windows or a conservatory. It’s also a necessity for cleaners, as it speeds up the job and allows you to have great results at all times.

There as many cleaning products available as many stars are on the sky. New ones are keep coming out even though we aren’t even familiar with the old ones. Some are cheap but has a lovely package, some are expensive and gives you the posh feeling. But which ones are actually useful??

I’m always sceptical when it comes to new, overhyped, overly promoted products. I always think its just marketing, and of course all products are The Best, The Only One You Need, The One That Does the Work Instead of You, and you’ve got to buy it!!! So, in the last few years I’ve been experimenting with new products: I’ve tried many of them, but only those which have been recommended by trusted people, friends and family. I’ve collected the ones that are my favourite: the ones that actually saves you time, saves you money and really makes cleaning much easier and fun. So here is my list.

Best cleaning products – Sph2onge cloth and block

I just love it!!! Seriously!! Its literally life changing. I’ve never seen such a product before! It took me a while to get used to it, but now I couldn’t be without it.

• First of all, why is it so special? It’s made of a rubber polymer, which makes it feel rubbery but still spongey. Thanks to that, its able to absorb a huge amount of liquid: up to 8x its own weight. Crazy!! It’s really useful with spillages, to dry up the water after cleaning the bathroom or drying up water from the fridge after defrosting.
• Once it’s got all the water in, it won’t leak: it will hold all the liquid up until you wring it.
• It’s also amazing for wet dusting: it will grab all the dust and dirt, but they won’t stick into the cloth. You can simply rinse the dirt and hair off of the Sph2onge and it looks like new again. It’s extremely useful for pet owners, as it collects all the pet fur easily: from any hard surface, carpets and upholstery.
• On top of that, when you wring it out properly, it won’t leave streaks behind. As a results, it’s one of the best things to use to clean windows or those glossy kitchen cupboards, that usually get dirty in a split of a second, typically right after you cleaned it…

Best cleaning products – Scrub Daddy

I never knew why is it such a big deal, why does everyone like it so much? So I had to try it and oh God I’m happy I did! It’s just great!

What to use it on?

It’s best to use on delicate surfaces, as it won’t scratch the surface, but will clean any stubborn dirt off of it. I love to use it on hobs, ovens, tiles and glossy surfaces. Unlike steel scourers, it won’t leave grey marks behind. As a result it’s the best thing to use on ceramic, cast iron and resin sinks. Of course, it’s also useful with any other sinks, let it be a common stainless steel one or a copper, as it won’t scratch the surface. It’s also a great help doing the washing up.

How does it work?

When you use it in cold water, it’s firm, so it can tackle the toughest dirts without using harsh chemicals. But once you use it in warm water, it turns to be a gentle, soft sponge. What’s not to love about it?

Best cleaning products – The Pink Stuff

I have never believed in this product. I’m not gonna lie, I thought it’s just way cheap to be as good as people say it is. The packaging also didn’t convince me, as to me it’s just seemed to be very cheap compared to their competitors.

Anyhow, a few months ago I’ve finally got myself to buy The Miracle Cleaning Paste and oh why I didn’t do it earlier?! In a nutshell: it cleans any dirt you have. Literally any!

• It removes limescale – not the tough and heavily built-up limescale, but it’s great for general limescale removal, especially on the sinks.
• Cleans hobs without scratching it – use it with a dry, firm Scrub Daddy and I guarantee you will have a scratch-free, clean hob in 2 minutes!
• Cleans ovens and oven racks – again, it’s not for those ovens that have a heavily built-up, burned grease on the bottom. But it’s amazing for regular cleaning of the oven, to help you keep on top of the cleaning.
• It cleans shoes – apply the paste to the shoes, leave it on for 15 minutes, wipe off and wash the shoes in the washing machine. Here is the full story.
• And last but not least, the main reason why I love it: it removes marks. Marks on doors, skirting boards, tiles, hard floors, ceramic sinks, bathtubs. Even those marks you thought that would never come off, the paste will remove it! And no, the marks won’t come back after you wipe the surface – I’ve tested it!

The oven cleaning team

Another amazing product from The Pink Stuff range is The Miracle Bathroom Foam Cleaner. Spray it on the shower screen, leave it for a few minutes to work, scrub with a Marigold Scrubaway pad, rinse and done. It’s not only powerful, but it also smells amazing! Again, it’s not for the toughest and heavily built-up limescale, but it’s a must have for general cleaning of your bathroom.

Well, I have planned to include waaay more products in this article, but soon I’ve realised that it won’t happen. There are just too many interesting and useful things to say about each products.  These features are not often mentioned and I wanted to include as many of them as I could.

Clean the bathroom effectively: In and Around the Bathtub

Bathtub is a very straight forward area to clean. Most of the times, a simple Flash bathroom cleaner will do the job. The tiles are trickier and usually requires a stronger chemical, for example the Astonish limescale remover. The same product can be used to descale the taps, although Viakal works a charm, too.

Shower doors are tougher. They have a clear surface, and as a result, limescale is more visible on them. For a stunning result, the best products to use are either the Astonish limescale remover for regular use or Harpic 10x toilet cleaner for built up limscale. Yes, Harpic 10x toilet cleaner is actually one of the best, if not the best product to use against tough limescale.

+1 Did you know you can easily remove the seal of the shower door? Most shower doors have an easily removable seal, just like the one you can see on the picture below. Once you remove it, you can let it soak in the mixture of hot water and some cleaning product and wipe it off. Voilà, here you have a shower door and seal, just like new!

Clean the bathroom effectively – The toilet bowl

The toilet bowl is another challenging area. You can maintain it’s cleanliness with most toilet cleaners, however if you’d like to use the best, then again, the Harpic 10x toilet cleaner is the one you need. In some cases, even the Harpic can’t help, so what should you use? Spirits of salt. The best spirits of salt you can use is the Kilrock brand, as this one actually works. No matter how much limescale is there or if the toilet bowl is discolored. Pour half the bottle in the bowl and in about 10-15minutes you will have a shiny toilet bowl. Please note: you must wear personal protective equipment when using this product, as it’s extremely strong. Gloves, goggles and even a mask is a must to wear when using this product. You must not mix it with any other chemical, as it could produce dangerous fumes.

There are so many amazing products out there, that can help you clean your bathroom effectively. Some are a bit pricey, some require health and safety precautions, however it’s extremely worth it as the end results are stunning. Cleaning an oven is more simple than it seems like and you need simple equipment for it too. These equipments are:

• Scraper, Wire scrub, Scouring pads: These are needed to get that stubborn grease off the surface.
• Cloths are used to wipe the dirt away once you’ve scrubbed the oven.
• Oven cleaner is one of the most important product. It’s necessary to use a strong cleaning product so you can have the desired outcome.

Strong and effective oven cleaner

• Window cleaner is used to do that final touch and make your oven nice and shiny.
• You’ll need a Screwdriver to take the back of the oven off so you can clean the fan motor blade.
• Safety goggles, Mask,Washing up Gloves are needed for your health and safety. Strong oven cleaning products can and will cause burn marks on your skin. If it goes into your eye, it’ll cause serious eye damage. It is a must to use mask to avoid inhaling its strong fumes.

The process of oven cleaning

Now that we’ve got the equipment, it’s time to get started. First, you’ll need a strong Oven cleaner. Spray the product in your oven, as well as on your oven racks. Leave it to do it’s magic for about half an hour.

Half an hour later, remove all shelving racks and rack holders and put them in your kitchen sink. Scrub them with wire scrub, and spray some more oven cleaner on it, if needed. Once it’s clean, thoroughly rinse it off with hot water and leave it to dry. If your oven has thick burnt food stuck on the bottom, use the scraper to scrape it up. For any other dirt you can use wire scrub and scouring pads. Once that’s done, wipe away all dirt with the cloth. Thoroughly rinse the cloth, then wipe the oven again, at least 2 or 3 times to ensure all chemicals have been removed.

The next step is to take the screwdriver and remove the back of the oven to clean the fan motor blade. Once that’s done and the oven is clean, it’s time to clean the glass doors of the oven with window cleaner for a nice finish.

Clean during Coronavirus: Sanitise touchpoints

Touchpoints are those areas of your home, which you touch most of the time. These are door handles, doors, door frames, handles of cupboards, handles of the taps, lamp switches. Because you touch them many times during a day, those are the most likely to carry any traces of virus. As a result, it’s recommended to give them a wipe frequently, but at least once every day or every other day. It’s especially important with the metal handles, as the current virus lives on metal parts the longest. You can use wet wipes, or antibacterial spray too. However, using hot water with a little splash of bleach should be the most effective way of cleaning these areas. Why? The virus hates hot water, so combining it with bleach, which is a very effective sanitizer is a perfect combination.

Frequently touched areas

Apart from doors, handles and lamp switches, there are some other frequently touched areas in your home. These areas are your desks, your computers and/or laptops, but especially the keyboards and mouse. Controllers, phones, wallets and purses, bags and even coats also belong to this category. Normally, people also touch these areas very often, but because it’s such a usual thing to do, many don’t actually realise that they touch those surfaces. This was a thorough list of all areas and things that we normally touch during the day. By following this and also by using gloves and mask whenever going outside, you can avoid bringing any traces of virus into your home. So, don’t panic and don’t start to scrub every corner of your home at least 3 times a day. Simply wash your hands often, especially when cooking, wash your clothes, coats, bags more often, sanitise your home certain times a week and stay home.

Limescale removal with Viakal

Viakal is the most known limescale remover in the UK. And it does do a great job, too. It is working fabulously when it’s used for regular cleaning. Although it’s effective, it isn’t a harsh chemical so perfect for most areas. However it’s mainly effective with small amount of limescale and can’t fight against built up limescale.

Vinegar and baking soda – Traditional limescale removal

This is probably one of the most natural and eco-friendly way of cleaning limescale.

This traditional cleaning method is still really powerful. How to use it? Simply sprinkle some baking soda on the affected area and pour some vinegar on it. It will instantly start to foam and gets the job done without scrubbing. It’s more powerful than the Viakal and its able to remove thin built up limescale.

Astonish Limescale remover

A big surprise for me. A friend of mine has offered this product to me. I was skeptical about it, as normally, 90% of the chemicals that are from supermarkets don’t work. But my friend was highly recommending it, so I thought I give it a go, what can I loose? So I’ve tried it and to my big surprise, it’s working amazingly! Again, this product is unfortunately unable to remove thick built up limescale. However, it’s doing a great job with tiles, shower doors, taps and sinks. Forget scrubbing and get Astonish! It has a lovely fragrance, too.

Limescale removal with Harpic Power Plus Toilet cleaner

Most of you probably know this product, and more likely even use it in your toilet bowl. However, I’m pretty sure that 90% of you have no idea, how powerful this product is with limescale. It’s doing a miracle! But you must be very careful when using it! Wearing gloves and mask is highly recommended, as it’s a really strong chemical. But you don’t only need to take care of yourself, but the surface you are using it on, as well. As for white tiles, bathtubs, shower trays, ceramic sinks it does not harm them at all. However, as for the metal surface you must be really careful with. I do not recommend pouring it onto the metal surface, as it can discolor some type of metal surfaces. Instead, pour a small amount of it onto a sponge or scouring pad. After a little bit of scrubbing, I guarantee you that there will be no limescale left behind.

How to clean the toilet bowl?

For most toilet bowls Harpic Toilet cleaner works perfectly fine. Using it once a week will maintain the cleanliness of the toilet. However, sometimes on the bottom of the toilet bowls, limescale can build up after a while. It normally makes the bottom of the toilet bowl black, and most limescale removers will not be able to clean it. There is although a very strong chemical, which requires very little or no scrubbing, and no hassle at all. This is the Spririt of Salt. It’s really simple to use, but again, it’s highly recommended to wear gloves, mask and even glasses, to avoid splashing it in your eyes. Most importantly, DO NOT MIX with ANY chemicals, as it can result in creating dangerous gas.

What about the really thick limescale?

Well, there is a good old traditional method to remove really thick limescale. Scraping. The best thing to use is some type of metal blade or spatula. Try to scrape it carefully, and once you’ve taken the most of it off of the surface, use Harpic or other limescale remover.

So, there are many ways to clean the limescale, but not all of them are effective. Most of the store-bought products are great for everyday use and to maintain the cleanliness. However, only a very few of them are actually able to fight against built up limescale. The best practice is to clean regularly so you can avoid fighting with limescale.
